Week 1 – January 6th, 2026 Theme: Introduction to Down Syndrome

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) guide created a guide, “Health Care Information for Families of Children with Down Syndrome,” which covers medical, age-related, and non-medical topics for social and school success. This week, let’s learn the basics with the Introduction and information on what to expect during pregnancy.

Week 2 – January 13th, 2026 Theme: Down Syndrome in Early Childhood

This week’s focus is on learning medical evaluations & supportive services for children with Down syndrome in two age groups: Birth to 1 month and 1 month  to 1 year. These guides help families know what to expect, recognizing that related medical conditions will differ for every child.

Week 3 – January 20th, 2026 Theme: Down Syndrome in Youth

The AAP’s guide outlines crucial health monitoring and care for children with Down syndrome aged 1-5 years, and 5-12 years, which emphasizes regular well-child visits, growth tracking, and necessary immunizations. Key medical focus areas include regular screening for hearing, vision, and thyroid issues, as well as addressing common concerns like heart conditions, sleep apnea, and gastrointestinal problems.

Week 4 – January 27th, 2026 Theme: Down Syndrome in Young Adults

The AAP’s health guide for adolescents and young adults (ages 12-21+) with Down Syndrome stresses yearly check-ups, continuous monitoring of growth, and annual screening for hearing, vision, and thyroid function. Key discussions cover mental health, sexuality, and planning adult transitions, such as education, independent living, vocational training, and specialized adult health care.
